#WHOSTHATGIRL?....

... No this time it is not Jess.

TopShop South Africa, which I had the pleasure of visiting the other day, {pretty shop, even prettier things to buy} I've just learnt is having a competition. They have partnered with one A-List Hollywood celebrity in their TopShop Christmas Film set to premiere on the 4th of December, and they have done a good job at keeping who this A-List celebrity is quiet, leaving us the crowd guessing #WHOSTHATGIRL? As part of their #WHOSTHATGIRL campaign TopShop SA has asked fans to guess who the celebrity is. So far they have released two teaser videos off their original TopShop Christmas Film,

Teaser 1

Teaser 2

And fans are meant to visit the Topshop South Africa Facebook Page, click on the #WHOSTHATGIRL tab on the homepage, fill in the entry form, and the name of the celebrity you think is featured in the video and then just cross your fingers and hope to die that the prize is yours. The prize? R5 000 TopShop shopping spree. I'm pretty sure I am going to attempt to enter, I mean, R5 000 to play around in TopShop is all the Christmas present I ever need. However my guessing game abilities are a little rusty.. So let me quickly go play a game or two of memory and I will be good to go.

The final video will go live on the 4th of December at 12PM, which is when the winner will be announced.

In the meantime good luck to all those who enter.

They Tried To Make Her Go To Rehab

It is just so sad to see and read about Amy Winehouse's passing. Death is really something we can never get used to. I had planned a post about something else, but when I heard about Amy Winehouse I guess all that went out the window.
I'm speechless to say the least.
I can't say I was a huge fan of her music or anything, but Amy was cool people. Most importantly she was a human being. I see a lot of people on twitter and facebook saying how all this is her fault and drug addicts deserve what comes their way, and what else did she expect?
I don't know, it's all just so sad. I don't think anyone deserves anything bad happening to them, especially something as terrible as death.
It's one thing to criticize drug addicts but it's another to think that their death is less important because of their drug use.
The way I see it, death is death. Whether you were hit by a car or you overdosed on pain killers, death is sad and should not be celebrated.
Rather celebrate the life someone lived.

Someone tweeted:

Another human being losing her life is sad. Amy was not a murderer or a rapist to deserve such nasty tweets from you perfect individuals!

How true.

As I said, I was not a huge fan, but here is to celebrating Amy Winehouse's life.

"I think we have to be aware that people are allowed to make mistakes" - Amy Winehouse

'I believe in casual sex. I know it's sad that I think cheating on people is fine. But I think it's like smoking a spliff. Oops, I've gobbed on myself!' - Amy Winehouse

'There's no point in saying anything but the truth. Because, at the end of the day, I don't have to answer to you, or my ex, or ... I shouldn't say God ... or a man in a suit from the record company. I have to answer to myself.' - Amy Winehouse

"You get straight men that are fu**ing big pussies like my ex-boyfriend, and gay men who are like, "Can I carry that for you? Take my jacket." And you wish they didn't like boys" - Amy Winehouse

'It's just my music. It's the only thing I have real dignity in in my life. That's the one area in my life where I can hold my head up and say, "No one can touch me." 'Cos no one can touch me!' - Amy Winehouse

“I don’t need help because if I can’t help myself I can’t be helped.” - Amy Winehouse

“It’s too much of a drinking culture, everything tastes better with a drink. Like, watch TV: glass of wine. Cooking dinner: glass of champagne. White wine vinegar hasn’t got white wine in it. Has it?” - Amy Winehouse

The good old fashioned way

"I’ve been thinking about letters recently. The real kind, long hand. And how terrible it is that nobody’s writing them any more."

I remember back when I was in high school my friends and I would make a big deal about writing letters.
A whole group of us would get together and write each other letters almost everyday, whether it was just a note to say I love you or a long detailed account of which boy did what to who, where and how.

I miss those days, not only because life seemed simpler then, but what happened to the old fashioned way of doings things?
I can be the first to admit that I am way caught up in technology, I love my cellphone and what could I possibly do without my laptop, and let's not get started on the television.
I. Need. These. Things.

But...

That quote up there is true.

I think one of the most amazing things is writing someone a letter. It is more personal than a Facebook inbox, BBM, tweet or text.
I just love the whole idea behind letter writing.
The thought behind it.
The time taken to do it.
Receiving them.
paper. {call me crazy, but there is nothing more amazing than a blank page}

I leave the boy a note here and there, but he sucks because he never replies them. It doesn't matter though because I still do it anyway.

Anyone feel like I do? What is your take on letter writing?
Yay..... or Nay?

While we were sleeping...

It's taken me this long to write a post about all the happenings in Japan, but I just could not find the right words to say. It's one thing to talk and write about how bad and terrible something is, but it's something else for the people who actually had to go through those bad and terrible things.

My heart definitely goes out to them

I heard somewhere that Life goes on, with or without you.
I have to say, this is the most real thing I have heard in a long time. I don't know if it's because I lack inspiration around me, or maybe because I don't hear a lot of 'real' things, but when I heard this it really took me a step back and made me think 'woah'
Granted it was said in the sense of, you have to make the most of your life, accept change, live and let live, and if you choose not to then that's YOUR problem because life is going to go on with or without you and it's your choice whether you want to stand on the sidelines and watch it pass you by or, get in the game and play!

But as I stew this around in my mind a little, I realise it means more than just live your life. I don't know if it's just me but, read this quote, I took this from the movie Perfect Getaway (weird weird movie)

"... If I just turn my head... ya know. For just a minute and... but don't tell me, but does everything just stop? Just shut down... go in to some energy saving hibernation mode, till I choose to reactivate them by simply turning my head back?"

This is how I feel when I go to sleep.

I just feel like everything goes to sleep with me, I'm so unaware of everything else that's going on around me (obviously) that it really feels like nothing IS going on around me and everything resumes again when I wake up. Call me crazy.

And then to wake up hearing from facebook and twitter that an earthquake AND tsunami, (not to mention the nuclear situation) hit Japan, I'm like wait what? when did this happen?? Well............... While you were sleeping.

This really put that line "life goes on with or without you" into perspective for me, because while I was busy dreaming of getting fat (see previous post) thousands of people were dying.
Just makes me sad you know? Not that being awake a thousand miles away would have helped anything either, but kinda just sucks!

They are going through a hard time over there (again, not like I actually know what the 'hard time over there' is) but I can definitely pray for them, we should all pray for them.

Let's not forget the things that happen while we were sleeping.

The Awkward Moment

Well here is an awkward moment for you, sponsored by the crickets *insert cricket noise* facebook is not closing on the 15th of March. Now some of you may say, 'oh well I knew that', and to that I say 'I'm so happy for you, you deserve five gold stars, you star pupil you'

This is all levels of awkward for me though, mainly because my post before this said it was closing down. I went the whole nine yards on this one, quotes and all.(Actually someone warned me about that) any way I take comfort in the fact that I was not the only one who fell prey to this false rumour, so there.

Let's laugh this one off shall we.

I wonder what happened to honest journalism though, you know, where you would read a story and know its true because that's just how the world works. It's as if all forms of ethics have been thrown out the window. Sad.

So lesson learnt, weeklyworldnews.com (which is where the story was published) = bad. Apparently the site is best known for its fictitious stories such as 'Alien spaceships to attack earth in 2011' and 'Megan Fox is a man'.. Honestly?

Teaches you not to believe most of what you reading, nothing of what you hear and all of what you see.

R.I.P Facebook

People usually have some morning routine they are used to you know, wake up, make their bed, go use the toilet, check perez hilton dot com and that's how their day begins, everyday for the rest of their life. Well, I have mine. I wake up, check twitter, and then facebook and by then I'm ready to get out of bed. So today, I wake up and obviously I check twitter and what do I see? News that facebook is CLOSING down on the 15 of March! *jaw drops*

How could Mark Zuckerberg say 'Facebook has gotten out of control' oh wait, that's actually true.
Ok then, how could he say that he does not think that people will be upset? Does he know how many children stay playing farmville? Does he know how many sad souls need to let people know "what's on their minds"? Does he know how many paedophiles he is putting out of business? No Mark, I can bet you A LOT of people will be upset.

He is right about one thing though, now people will actually make the effort to have real contact with people and make real friends. And that's a really good thing. Some people have like a gazillion fafillion (yes that's a number) friends and when it actually comes down to it they actually often only talk to ten people. *raises hands* I can admit to that, I have quite a few friends and I only care about and talk to a selected few. So Mark 1- the rest of the world 0

Even though I check my facebook every morning, I kind of lost interest in it. I mean I love facebook and everything and it will always have a place in my heart, its kind of one of those things that are hard to let go of, you know your first puppy, your old house. So yes I was and am still quite shocked at this news, thank you Mark, but im sure the world will carry on just fine without facebook. In fact it will.

So if you care for your pictures, notes, links and videos make sure you get them before the 15th of March or they will be permanently erased. Hpmh and there we thought our pictures might just stay on the internet forever. The rest of the world 1- Mark 0

L.O.V.E <~~ what is this?

"L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore
Cuz love is all that I can give to you, love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it, take my heart and please don't break it, love was made for me and you!"

I had 2 open this post with the lyrics of Nat King Coles famous song "L.O.V.E" because I recently watched The Parent Trap for like the gazillionth time this past week..... (Yes, I love it that much. Don't judge me.). And like every other romantic movie out there, (refer to previous blog post) it teaches us that love can conquer all... Or at least it should be able to.

I'm a sucker for love, break my heart a thousand times (touch wood) and I'm sure I will still believe in "the one".. But even so, love confuses me, its not so black and white like many movies, books and songs make it appear to be. I had a status on facebook the other day about what would mean more: if someone says "I love you" or if they say "love you" and someone said to me, either way love is a term that's now loosely used.

So what is love? This is one of the most difficult questions asked, right there with questions about quantum physics and the stock exchange. No one can give a proper definition, to some love is friendship that's been set on fire, to others love is like luck that you may just stumble upon, to a few love is the feeling you hope someone gets when you feed them a mixture of perfume, water and tea leaves. Either way, we all have our different definitions, and when I asked my 5 year old sister what hers is, she looked at me innocently and said "its when you get together with someone and kiss"

Its funny how most of us are confused about love yet it seems so easy to children. It did not take a lot of thought from my little sister before she said that, she just said it. So I thought it would be fun to see what other children thought about love, and then maybe, just maybe I would FINALLY know what I'm dealing with.
Here is what I found:

On what falling in love is like:-
'Its like an avalanche where you have to run for your life' (Roger 9)

'If falling in love is like learning how to spell, I don't want to do it. It takes too long' (Leo 7)

Why love happens between two particular people:-
'I think you're supposed to get shot with an arrow or something, but the rest of it is not supposed to be so painful' (Harlen 8)

How people in love typically behave:-
'Mooshy... Like puppy dogs... Except puppy dogs don't wag their tails nearly as much' (Arnold 10)

'When a person gets kissed for the first time, they fall down and they don't get up for at least an hour' (Wendy 8)

'All of a sudden, the people get movies fever so they can sit together in the dark (Sherm 8)

What is the proper age to get married:-
"Eighty four! Because at that age, you don't have to work anymore and you can spend your time loving each other in your bedroom' (Judy 8)

'Once I'm done with kindagarten, I'm going to find me a wife' (Tom 5)

What do most people do on a date:-
'On the first date they tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested to go on a second date' (Mike 10)

When is it okay to kiss someone:-
"You should never kiss a girl, unless you have enough bucks to buy her a big ring and her own VCR, cause she will want to have videos of the wedding' (Jim, 10)

Is it better to be single or married:-
"It gives me a headache to think about that stuff. I'm just a kid I don't need that kind of trouble" (Kenny 7)

Good looks in love:-
'It isn't always just how you look. Look at me, I'm handsome like anything and I haven't got anyone to marry me yet' (Gary, 7)

Confidential opinions about love:-
'I'm in favour of love, as long as it does not happen when The Simpsons is on television' (Anita 6)

'Love will find you, even if you hide from it. I've been trying to hide from it since I was 5 but the girls keep finding me' (Bobby 8)

Personal qualities necessary to be a good lover:-
'One of you must know how to write a check because even if you have tons of love, there is still going to be a lot of bills' (Aya 8)

Ways to make a person fall in love with you:-
'One way is to take the girl out to eat. Make sure its something she likes to eat. French fries usually works for me' (Bart 9)

What are most people thinking when they say I love you:-
'The person is thinking yeah I do really love him, but I hope he at least showers once a day' (Michelle 9)

How to make love endure:-
'Don't forget your wifes name.... That will mess up the love' (Dick 7)

'Don't say you love someone and then change your mind, love isn't like picking which movie you want to watch' (Natalie 9)

Kids say the darndest things, but we could learn from them :)

"see friendship"

My title may resemble something so silly Facebook has done, speaking of which, what gives? See wall-to-wall was crazy enough, now we must see friendship? I swear Facebook may be trying to kick us grown folk out of there, either that or they are seriously trying to breed some serious stalkers. Either way you look at it, its dumb. The only friendship I'm trying to see is real friendship, which brings me to......

I remember growing up with a sweet poem about friendships, something about "there are many types of ships. yellow ships, blue ships, red ships, but the best and most important ships are friendships" *warning- I may have tempered slightly with that poem, it may have been something about the only ships that don't sink are friendships but my point still remains the same* a statement that should be so true in reality is not.

They say that friends next to family are people that remain in your life forever, and only boys/girls come and go... how wrong are we, everyone comes and goes, people always leave (except family, they are stuck with you, shame.)

How many of us sat next to someone in preschool and thought "this is my friend forever", look around you where are they now? those of you who still have them, kudos to you, but most of us have almost little to no memories of preschool except those embarrassing ones told to us by our parents. Friends are the family we choose, but most of us make mistakes of expecting too much, not expecting anything at all and not treating friendships as they should be.

Life is a balance, up down, good bad, right wrong, happy sad, and it is unrealistic to think that people should be perfect all the time. We all have our faults and just because they are different from someone else does not make you any better. sounds like common sense? well it should be, but apparently is not. I would think as you grow older the more sound, long lasting friendships people make, but what I see around me is the opposite, I see many friendships dying over petty issues. Ever heard the saying money does not grow on trees, well neither do friendships. Expecting things from people is natural to us human beings, its like the "on" button is activated once we become close to someone, we would not expect anything from the stranger next door but we would expect the world from our best friend, and I guess that's because we THINK we can give them the world but show me someone who has the world and I will stop writing now............. thought so.

Sometimes peoples expectations come in a box labeled impossible, and honestly they are asking for disappointment. Most people with high expectations always land up disappointed. Then they say, "I'm going to stop expecting things from people because they always disappoint me" ........ well that probably gets them as far as their next disappointment because lets face it, 1) that "on" button is already activated and 2) that's dumb. All it is, is be normal, take into consideration that you too are human and make mistakes. Take me down from that pedestal, remove that halo from my head, because I would rather stand side by side than sit at the top and disappoint you without even knowing.

There are also those people that claim to be your friend and the second your back is turned a knife is jammed right through it, well.... we are not talking about those people because they are not friends. We may not be born with a bull-shit-O-meter (although some seem to have purchase them somewhere) but I think sometimes you can tell when someone is about to pull a fast one on you, they talk about their own friends to you, they have flip flop personalities and if someone like that stabs you in the back, I'm sorry but why was your back turned?

It may sound like a cliche but people honestly have to take the bad with the good, we all have issues, its called life. Those who don't have issues are clones. We cannot be all things to all people, but we can definitely be a friend. Do not just drop friends because he/she does not agree with you, says things you may not agree with, or does things differently from you. As long as this person is not being nasty or harming you in any way then let them be, its called individuality for a reason.

The way people drop friends like bad habits is kinda scary, there are many people in the world that we can easily make new friends with and that's nice but to me its not really how many friends we have had that matters, its how many long term friendships you have maintained. Yes, way may not be friends with the person we played hide and seek with in preschool but we have real friendships now, real friendships that we could work on. I read somewhere that friends are not entitlements, they are gifts from God. With that said, I'm not trying to throw away my gifts, they are mine!

Its really true when they say be the change you want to see in the world, and be the person you want to have in your life, being around when times are good is easy but being around when times are tough is amazing. The same way good times may fade, the bad times go just as quickly, nothing last forever except obviously friendships, if you let them.
"Its far better to have had a dozen true friends than thousands of relationships that came and went"

hello friend

If you dont stand for something you will fall for anything

What's funny is that some of us have words or sayings that we live by every day, and even then we don't really understand the true meaning of them.

When people want to give up we tell them "can't never did anything but sit on the fence and watch can go by", when people are angry and hurt we tell them "if you cant say anything nice don't say anything at all" or my personal favorite when people are undecided about things we often say "if you don't stand for something you will fall for anything." How unfair...... because we are the exact same people that also give up, and say hurtful things to others out of anger and find it hard to make decisions. As true as they are when they are coming out of our mouths, is as true as they should be putting them into actions.

I've got to admit, I've got one of those "what happens, happens" attitudes, I find it hard to make decisions and I'm generally a "yeah that's cool" kinda girl. In my defense: it actually will be cool, it's not my fault I find everything cool. I would like to think that out of the 6,790,062,2(1)<--- (that's me)6 people in the world I am not the only one with this difficulty. Which is why I like the saying "if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything", not because I fall for everything, and not because I am undecided, but because it makes me realize that I'm not going believe in anything if I don't know anything.

The more someone says this to me, or tweets it, or updates it as their facebook status, the more meaning it has to me, and becomes clearer in its message. It's not just about joining your friend in a war between her and her roommate, or being able to decide what you want for Christmas, or saying "I support same sex marriages". It's more than that, It's about having the integrity and strength to stand up for what you believe in and stick by them. That's why I admire groups like the feminists, no random on the street can walk up to them and say "lovely dress, oh by the way men are God's gift to earth". That might be the longest conversation of that person's life because that feminist will stand there and tell them why that's not true until they are blue in the face.

I'm not saying become a feminist, or join the catholic church, or marry Robert Mugabe, but what I am saying is if you think Toy story 3 is the best animated film of 2010 then don't stand there and let somebody else convince you that Shrek Forever After was way better. If you see no color in people, don't stand there and let someone tell you about "black" and "white".

At the end of the day do what Bhudda says "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations." RATHER believe in yourself and when something agrees with you accept it and live up to it.
